12/13/06 - HENRY AND MUDGE OPENS OFF-BROADWAY

Beginning Dec. 13, Theatreworks/USA presents the New York premiere of Henry and Mudge, the new family-friendly musical based on Cynthia Rylant's picture books about a boy and his 182-pound companion. The official opening at Off-Broadway Lucille Lortel Theatre is scheduled for Dec. 17, and the limited engagement — under the direction of Peter Flynn — will play through Jan. 20, 2007.

Henry and Mudge, which features music by Brian Lowdermilk and book and lyrics by Kait Kerrigan, boasts a cast led by Jennifer Cody as Annie, Patrick Boll as Dad, Joseph A. Morales as Henry, Joan Hess as Mom and Todd Buonopane as Mudge. The creative team also includes Devanand Janki (choreography), Paul Weimer (scenic design), Rob Bevenger (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), Eric Shim (sound design) and Lowdermilk (orchestrations).

The musical, according to press notes, is described thusly: "Moving from the city to a new house in the country can be tough. Just ask Henry. He misses Annie, his cousin and best friend, and can't find a playmate in his new neighborhood. Luckily Mom and Dad buy him a great, big, slobberly dog — Mudge — with whom he can share all kinds of adventures. It looks like Henry and Mudge will be best friends forever, until Annie arrives for a visit. Will Annie come between a boy and his dog? Can a kid have two best friends?"

The Lucille Lortel Theatre is located in Manhattan at 121 Christopher Street. Tickets, priced at $25, are available by calling (212) 279-4200. The production is recommended for ages four and up.

6/1/06 - THE MUSIC OF KAIT KERRIGAN & BRIAN LOWDERMILK

On Monday, November 20, 2006, ASTEP (Artists Striving To End Poverty) presents the fifth ArtCents Benefit Concert, a new monthly concert series featuring the works of emerging songwriters, at The Triad on New York’s Upper West Side (158 W. 72nd St.). This fourth ArtCents Benefit Concert features the music of composer Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk, as performed by a lineup of theatrical artists including Todd Buonopane (…Spelling Bee), Matt Cavenaugh (Grey Gardens), Sara Chase, Tony winner Michael Rupert (Sweet Charity, Ragtime) and Kate Wetherhead (…Spelling Bee).

Kerrigan and Lowdermilk were awarded the 2006 Jonathan Larson Award. Their adaptation of Henry and Mudge, commissioned by TheaterworksUSA will premiere Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre this December. Other New York productions include The Woman Upstairs and Wrong Number, both of which were featured in the New York Musical Theatre Festival (2004, 2005 respectively). Their latest original musical, The Unauthorized Biography of Samantha Brown, has received a reading in the Artist's Showcase Reading Series at the 92nd Street Y, was featured in the 2005 NAMT Songwriters Showcase, and most recently had a workshop at Manhattan Theatre Club directed by Chris Ashley. They were awarded a 2004-2005 Jonathan Larson Fellowship at the Dramatists Guild and they are members of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. and admission is your spare change…by the jar, by the bag, as much as you can scrape together. There is also a two-drink minimum. Reservations can be made by calling 212-706-1516 or by sending an email to tickets@createsomethinggood.org. All proceeds from the concert benefit ASTEP.
