“The Proposal”
from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown
Have sex with me.
Have sex with me.
In my room, I have a pack of condoms.
In the other room, I even have a bed.
Have sex with me,
And I’ll give you your own key.
Just sleep with me.
Please sleep with me.
I will make you pancakes in the morning.
And I’ll make you breakfast in bed –
Won’t you please have sex with me.
I make great Darjeeling tea.
Can’t you hear the wind out there?
Can you hear it whisper in your hair?
All the gales and gods understood:
Sex is good.
The midnight poets know
You love by choosing what it is you see.
Have sex with me.
Have sex with me.
Maybe not today, maybe tomorrow.
Maybe not tomorrow, maybe in a week.
Have sex with me.
And your dinner will be free.

This song is sung by Samantha’s boyfriend Adam. It is part of a fantasy sequence where Sam imagines what Adam is thinking as they play an innocent game of Jenga on a Friday night.

The first time I heard this melody, the lyrics were “stand here with me”… how did it progress to “have sex with me”? Just wondering.

A long while back, we were looking for a different song for this slot. “Stand Here with Me” had sort of vague lyrics but a fantastic melody. We were looking for something that might be funny but was definitely what we meant. I started thinking about what the song actually was about and it’s this guy who wants to have sex with his girlfriend. As I thought of this, walking down E. 4th Street, I jokingly sang the lyric on the existing melody. I did it primarily to amuse myself. I wrote the 2nd line so that I could call Brian and amuse him. When I called him, he laughed loud. I thought we’d leave it at that but as we talked about it, we realized that this was exactly within the world / tone of the show we were hoping SAM BROWN would become. I wrote the remainder of the lyrics on the subway and walking to a friend’s house at 110th street. I have no idea why I remember where I wrote this one so distinctly, but I do.

But wait. What I should have asked was how did you know “Stand Here w Me” back in the day???

….that was a fantasy sequence?? Either I can’t remember a thing, or that didn’t come across at ALL at the performance in Boston. Hard to say…

A friend of mine played me an mp3 of completely undisclosed origin… and I really loved the melody enough that it stuck. (I’m a music education major, melodies stick to me)

We’d be happy to come to Syracuse for a master class or concert or something. Have your people contact our people (by our people - rest assured, that we mean us… not any fancy “other” people). We have vocal selections available for sb and for bad years but not full scores because we haven’t produced the whole shows yet so we can’t possibly sell them. we don’t want the whole mystique gone by the time you sit your butt in the seat!

You guys give me hope for musical theatre. Whether epic, sad, funny, irreverent, or heartfelt you guys just seem to hit the money every time. I’m heading into my final year on a musical theatre course and I’m going in armed with as many of your pieces as I can. I’m determined to do “Someone elses life” as my showcase song!
Thank you for being so freakin’ talented!
