“Run Away With Me”
from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown
Let me catch my breath.
This is really hard.
If I start to look like I’m sweating
That’s ‘cause I am.
I’m not good with words.
But that’s nothing new.
Still I have to try to explain what I want to do
With you…
With you.
Run away with me.
Let me be your ride out of town.
Let me be the place that you hide.
We can make our lives on the go.
Run away with me.
Texas in the summer is cool.
We’ll be on the road like Jack Kerouac
Looking back,
Sam, you’re ready,
Let’s go
Anywhere.
Get the car packed and throw me the key.
Run away with me.
Sam, I know it’s fast.
I’m in love with you.
Sam, it’s crazy but Sam, I’m crazier for you.
I have these plans.
Sam, I have these plans
Of a house that we build on a bay
When we run away.
Let me be your ride out of town.
Let me be the place that you hide.
We can make our lives on the go.
Run away with me.
Alabama heat – sign me up.
We’ll be on the road like some country song.
Won’t be long.
Sam, you’re ready.
Let’s go
Anywhere.
Get the car packed and throw me the key.
Run away with me.
I’m not trying to make you a wife here,
I’m not trying to tie you down.
I’m just saying there may be a life here –
A new one as soon as we run,
Just as soon as we run.
Run away
Let me be your ride out of town.
Let me be the place that you hide.
We can make our lives on the go.
Run away with me.
Mississippi mud – watch me slide.
We’ll be on the road like Jack Kerouac,
Looking back.
Sam, you’re ready, Sam
Let me be your ride out of town.
Run away with me.
California dreams here we come
Romeo is calling for Juliet
Ready, set
Sam, you’re ready.
Let’s go
Anywhere.
Say the word and I’m already there!
Run away with me.

This is probably still the number one contender for my fav K+L song…I wish some boy would say this to me…haha. Gorgeous. It never gets old.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
This song is really beautiful, I can’t stop listening to it, if someone sang this to me I would just be a puddle on the floor. I was wondering where this song fits into the plot of the show?
October 4th, 2008 at 9:56 am
All right, kids. Gather round the camp fire. Here is the story of why / how / when Adam says to Sam, “Run Away with Me”.
So, throughout the show, Sam has been grappling with the first real decision of her life so far - will she or will she not go to college? And, a follow up: will she instead drive off at dawn to find her own unscripted life without waking her parents to say goodbye?
Throughout the show, she is revisiting scenes during her senior year (when these desires for flight first surfaced) and she is trying to grapple with what she really wants to do. Throughout, Adam is supportive and even relatively quiet. You see, Sam is the valedictorian of her high school and Adam is not the brightest bulb in the pack. He’s sweet. He’s way more mature in Sam in a lot of ways. But he’s not the smartest and she is constantly aware of this.
“Run Away with Me” is where everything shifts. While sitting in the DMV, waiting for Sam to take her driver’s test for the 4th and final time, Adam finally breaks through Sam’s near-constant stream of monologic analysis and sings this song.
Does she run away with him? Good question. I guess you’ll have to see the show to find out. Though I’m sure that you can figure it out if you think about it.
Hope this helps.

This is one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. It’s perfect. Have you won awards with this song?
October 23rd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Thanks! We’ve never won an award specifically for this song but we did win the Jonathan Larson Award and this was one of the songs we submitted. I’m proud of this song because even though it’s probably the most played song that we have, and the song that I’ve heard sung the most, I’m still happy to hear it. I think Brian’s music is really exciting and I’m proud of the way the character talks in the song - it feels honest even after all this time.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Is there a place to get sheet music for this specific song, or must one purchase the book in which this song is contained?
I truly think it’s brilliant and I’m making–er, encouraging–a friend of mine to sing it for a college audition.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:34 am
sorry, not right now. it’s in the songbook, which we’re trying to push, and which also contains a bunch of other helpful audition songs!
October 24th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Many thanks; I appreciate the response

this song is just… mind blowing… and passionate and just… incredible… i can’t stop listening to it…
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:40 pm
This Song. It has to be one of the most amazing and beautiful songs i have ever heard in musical theatre. When people ask me alot of times to name some of my favorite songs in musical theatre i always name this one. It almost always brings a tear to my eye. Its lyrics are so simple so powerful. I love It. I have staged this number when someone sang this in a cabaret production i put on last year and i plan on singing this song for a solo at my school coming up soon.
December 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Thanks, man! That means a lot to us.
We’re SO excited to finally see it staged in the upcoming year!
December 10th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Its getting staged?! Really? Wow. Thats amazing. I’ve listened to the music from the show and i really like it and would absolutely LOVE to see it. Let me know how the process goes and where it goes up at. =)
December 12th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Don’t worry. It will definitely make the “news” on our website (and probably the forum and the lyrics blog and our front page - we are very excited).
December 14th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

i just wanted to say that i absolutely love Tales from the Bad Years! i can’t wait until it goes to Broadway. i’m always singing your songs, and make all my friends listen to them. my best friend and i sing “Anonymous Sex” all the time. hope to see the sheet music soon! don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing brian and kait!
January 11th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Sheet music for Anonymous Sex is available in our online shop. And I just wanted to point out (so that you don’t get sad and disappointed if and when - godwilling, fingers crossed, buddha belly rub - Bad Years goes to the big white way), Run Away with Me is in our show …SAM BROWN, which ALSO has aspirations for rockin the bway hard in the not too distant future (or so we hope).
Glad you like the songs!!
January 18th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
whoa.
January 21st, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Absolutely brilliant song! A friend of mine played me the version on Youtube of Michael Arden (I’m currently music directing a production of “Bare”) singing it. I had to immediately learn it on the piano and then arrange it for acoustic guitar. Yeah, ‘cuz I’m a dork like that.
Anyhow, this easily one of my favorite musical theater ’songs’ I’ve ever heard. It’s honest and incredibly moving. I’d love to see this show!
January 21st, 2009 at 2:28 pm
That’s so cool. You should make a recording / video w the acoustic guitar arrangement. I’d LOVE to hear that. I primarily heard the song with piano (and we have a recording of Josh Young singing w piano, bass, violin, cello which is very cool). Please share it with us! We have some really exciting news to announce about SAM BROWN really soon. So keep an eye out.
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:25 am
I will DEFINITELY record it. I plan on performing it with a singer at a showcase on February 20th and doing it on acoustic guitar. So I’ll record it on either audio or video and send it your way! I’d definitely be interested in what you think of it.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:25 am
Sounds awesome. Can’t wait.
February 8th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
The problem with living at the bottom of Australia is that we don’t get to see fresh, living, exciting, challenging musical theatre. Thank God for youtube, which led me to this song and this site. Although I can only experience this second hand, it is way better than nothing. And, although it’s been said many times, many ways - I love this song!
February 9th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Bring us out! We’re not afraid of a little “bottom of Australia”.
February 14th, 2009 at 10:07 am

March 3rd, 2009 at 4:46 am
This song blew me away! I bought the songbook the very day I first heard it. I had to have this song. Done. End of Story. I’m going to forward your links, with your permission, back to my professors at CCM. I am sure they would be more than happy to have you guys if you wouldn’t mind making a trip to Cincinnati. Finally…Finally…great songs for twenty-somethings. Much love to you guys.
March 7th, 2009 at 2:12 am
I know watching Michael Arden sing this song on youtube does not do it justice no matter how great of an actor he is, therefore I’m asking, When will this show finally go on stage?I’ll fly from LA just to come see it-your words came to me last week right when I needed it the most and the music gives me hope for life-Thank You
April 12th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
This is so. Powerful. Wow.
I just heard this song for the first time about a week ago, and I cannot get it out of my mind. Not just the lyrics, the tune… but the FEELING. I can’t hardly describe it.
Every time I try to sing it, I have to choke back the tears.. not from sadness, but from the pure honesty and HEART that is this song…
Thank you thank you thank you.
April 22nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Just saw the performance in Orange County last night. Can’t stop listening to this song. This, “Say the Word”, and “I Wouldn’t Change Anything” are my favorites. Any chances that you’ll be posting the mp3 for “I Wouldn’t Change Anything” on the site? Just loved it.
Thank you.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Thank you so much! It’s so great to hear which songs you liked. We just finished I Wouldn’t Change Anything not that long ago, so we don’t have a demo done for it. We will put it up if/when we make it! Thank you so much for coming to the show! Please tell your friends.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I absolutely adore this song!
Is there any way a recording by Aaron Tveit will be made available?
Or Helene and Phoebe’s version of “Freedom”?
Thank you so much for writing such wonderful music
May 4th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
hey brian and kait! ive never left a comment on your blogs before, probably because i wanted to take a long time to really let your music sink in. all the heart and soul behind your music finally hit me, and i felt compelled to tell you that your music is perhaps the most beautiful ive ever heard in my life. “Run Away With Me” and “Not a Love Story” are my favorites, but i love them all. i would really love to see a professionally staged production of one of your fantastic musicals. if something like that does happen in the future, i’d really appreciate if you could e-mail me information about auditions. it would be an honor and a privilege to audition for, and maybe become a part of, a piece written by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk. thank you both for taking the time to read this comment, and for the impact you’ve made on theatre.
May 13th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
hey guys! i was just wondering, i love the song, by the way, what key the recording on the website is in? thanks os much, this song is amazing.
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:02 am
I just discovered your music a couple of weeks ago. I am so sorry for taking so long to discover your, probably redundant since you must be told this all the time, amazing music. This song is probably one of my favorites. Listening to this, my heart just swells and I just feel like crying because the lyrics, the music, everything about it is just so beautiful. So, before I get all fangirlish over you guys, I just want to say thank you for creating these works of art.
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 am
thank YOU, angela, for using the adjective fangirlish. that totally made my morning.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Well, I’m happy to have made your morning. ^^
July 14th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Wow. So I first heard this amazing song on youtube when I was basking in the wonder that is Gavin Creel’s voice. A video of Aaron Tveit singing this appeared on the side, so I decided to bask in the wonder that is his voice. It is quite possibly the sweetest most amazing song I’ve ever heard. So then of course I had to check out more of your music, and you guys are ridiculously talented. Pleaseeeeee get to Broadway so the entire world can know how amazing you guys are. And thanks.
August 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
ahhhh i would kill to be able to see this show, but orange county is so far away from little east coast me. please keep us all updated about any chances to see samantha brown on the east coast… i’m in love with the music just simply from the recordings and youtube, so i bet it’s amazing live!
August 21st, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Hey Guys! I just wanted to tell you that I’m obsessed with your music…your songs have the perfect melodies, and the accompaniment is just mind blowing. However, I was wondering if along with your lyrics you could maybe provide guitar chords?? Cause I’ve been trying to figure them out, but I can’t seem to get it!! But anyway, I’m a huge fan, and I can’t wait till you guys get to broadway! I’ll be there opening night!!
October 26th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
This is the most beautiful song I think I’ve ever heard. I would love to see the show at some point.
November 14th, 2009 at 12:03 am
Have you heard Aaron Tviet’s version of this song?
It’s absolutly beautiful.
By the way, I love this song, the lyrics are superb.
December 29th, 2009 at 4:22 am
I really love this song. Specially Aaron Tveit’s version, I melt down every time I listen him singing……C:
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:02 am
Oh my…. I just discovered your music by a random search of what comes up when I hunt for my business name. I am in Australia and I would just love to not only play the song as a sound bite on my website, but also just want to sing the song myself. I am in the wedding industry and do elopements so you can imagine how much this suits my business. I would love to see the musical. Please bring it to Australia. D XXXX
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:46 pm
I’m obsessed with this song. I’m also from Australia (looks like I’m not alone!). I also like the Aaron Tveit version… It gives me butterflies when I hear it. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to Australia (and hire me to direct *hint hint* haha)!! You guys are amazing. I’m so happy to have found this site and your music! It’s beautiful work! Please never stop…
February 4th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Guys - we would love nothing more than to come to Australia. We have no idea how one ends up in Australia as we don’t have any business contacts there but if you do… let us know!
February 11th, 2010 at 3:16 am
Okay kait if you guys go to Australia please take me with you. I’ll be your bitch and get your coffee and lunches and all that. hahahaha
February 12th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
A kid from our school is doing this song for your centerstage performance and it is beautiful. it gives me goosebumbs everytime i hear it.
February 15th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Okay, so I have a major crush on Aaron Tveit, and I was doing a little google stalking, you know, to see if he was doing anything new since I saw him in “Next to Normal” last September. I came upon the video of him singing this song. Can I just say ,my heart melts every time. I have listened to this song on repeat for about three days straight, and it just never gets old. The first time I heard it, I started to cry, I just love how honest and vulnerable it makes the boy sound, and to just hear him open up to this girl, and so suddenly, it’s really, for a lack of a better word, beautiful.
March 14th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
There are few songs written that allow a person to fully escape into the music. Yet, every time, I hear this song, I’m transferred out of reality. I’m just swept away by the melody. My eyes close, and the lyrics are all I hear and feel. It’s on the same caliber as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night.” It hypnotizes and just takes your breath away. Pure brilliance.
March 17th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
My girlfriend heard this and immediately made me look it up and sing it to her over the phone
absolutely beautiful music this song is simply moving i love it!
March 22nd, 2010 at 10:51 am
I lovelovelove this song.
I first saw it on youtube, with Aaron Tveit singing it, so I knew it had to be good. Watched, and definitely not disappointed. Later, I saw the boy I have a bit of a crush on singing it. Basically means the song is my new favorite, hahaha. So gorgeous though. (:
May 16th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
Completely obsessed with this song. A boy in my song as theatre class sang this, I think Brian came to see the performance, and just does such a wonderful job with it. Beautiful.
May 21st, 2010 at 6:52 pm
To the writers:
What did you think of Aaron Tveit’s performance of the song?
May 22nd, 2010 at 12:45 pm
We asked Aaron to sing the song for that concert. We think he’s wonderful. We also love Michael Arden and the guys who have played the part in productions / readings including but not limited to Nick Blaemire, and Curt Hansen. We’ve been incredibly lucky to work with all of them.
May 22nd, 2010 at 9:59 pm
Do you have any downloadable tracks of Aaron singing Run Away With Me? I just discovered this show and I’m in love! I hope that you guys make it to Broadway!
May 23rd, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Sorry. It just happened live (and lives on in the land of YouTube).
May 30th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Like the lyrics and all, but there is a funny story behind it. I found these lyrics written on a piece of paper from my, now ex, boyfriend. Instead off writing Sam, he replaced the name with Bree. Oh yeah, and not to mention, my name is Serena. HaHa. Explains why he is now an ex I guess
August 6th, 2010 at 9:33 am
ok- that was mindblowing! i got goosbusbumps all over! thanks a thausand times for that wonderful song!
