“Freedom”
from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown
KELLY
Let’s go.
The highway’s calling.
The sun is shining.
Let’s get in the car and just remember.
Let’s go.
SAM
Kelly drove on all of our roadtrips.
She believed in list’ning to the highway.
You start driving,
And keep driving.
There’s no stopping ‘til Kelly says you’ve arrived.
KELLY: You’re not doing it right.
SAM: Doing what?
KELLY: You’re not in it.
SAM: What are you talking about?
KELLY: You’re not in the moment, Sam. Talk about what it felt like.
SAM: What did it feel like?
KELLY
You remember.
Feeling the wind blowing your hair.
You’re not even trying.
SAM: I am.
KELLY
Try harder.
Picking a road and going anywhere.
Remember the biker bar?
SAM: Oh god.
KELLY
We’re heading south.
And the biker.
Or maybe west.
We don’t know much.
We’re making up the rest.
Tear up the atlas.
Don’t read the road signs.
Driving for the sake of driving anywhere.
That’s freedom.
SAM
Freedom.
KELLY
Freedom. Freedom. Freedom.
SAM
Driving fast, the radio playing. Windows open, singing like we’re rockstars.
KELLY
Counting the miles as we go passed.
SAM
The tank is full. The sun is high.
KELLY
Knowing that every mile could be our last.
SAM
Just watching the day go by.
SAM AND KELLY
We won’t look back. We never will.
SAM
We’ve come too far.
KELLY
We’ll drive til we hit Nashville.
SAM
Nashville.
SAM AND KELLY
Freedom. Freedom. Freedom.
SAM
And I’m almost starting to feel it.
How she took a day and made it special.
The long highways.
The cheap rest stops.
The last minute get in the car and let’s go.
KELLY
Oh, let’s go.
Let’s go.
Pick a road.
Pick a high way.
Any road is going my way.
Let’s go.
Live it up with no complicated philosophies.
No college, no career, No kids, no fancy house, no.
Let’s go.
Any road but the one we’re on.
SAM AND KELLY
No college, no career, No screaming kids, no mortgage.
Driving anywhere.
KELLY
Just driving straight into the dawn. That’s freedom.
SAM
Kelly driving. Me riding shotgun.
Just a couple girls out on the highway.
With no road map
And no curfew.
Just two girls with nowhere we have to be.
Now she’s laughing.
And I start laughing.
It’s so real and so like a memory.
And the sun is so bright that i’m squinting.
And it feels like i found freedom.
SAM AND KELLY
Freedom. Freedom.
SAM
Driving fast, the radio blaring. Windows open, singing like we’re rock stars.
KELLY
Oh yeah.
SAM
Yeah.
KELLY
Yeah.
SAM
Yeah.
KELLY
Yeah.
SAM
Yeah.
KELLY
Yeah.
SAM
Yeah.
SAM AND KELLY
Freedom.
Freedom.
Freedom.

I love this song so much! not only does it caputre the essence of a road trip, but it also captures the purity of friendship. this song reminds me of my friends and i and the moments that never seem to end; and when they do end, they still seem to linger in your thoughts everyday. thank you so much for writing the perfect song!

I really love every song from Samantha Brown!! Will this ever be on broadway?
July 5th, 2009 at 9:56 am
We will definitely make a big announcement as soon as we have the next definite step. I don’t think that’s what the next step would be right away but you never know where things will end up!

Can we buy a CD of Samantha Brown or expect at least any more recordings of some of the songs?
July 26th, 2009 at 9:20 am
We’re hoping our producers will make a concept album or some more distributable demos. There are union rules that prevent us from recording the live show so there aren’t any new recordings yet. We really want to have a cd of it - so we’ll definitely make a big announcement if that happens!

Oh, awesome!!! Will Samantha Brown ever come to off-broadway or broadway? I live on the other side of California :(…only a little less than 40 minutes away from NYC, actually. LOL. I’m obsessed with your music!! (Not in a creepy way…) Also, do you have an mp3 of Phoebe Strole’s version of “How to Return Home?” or any mp3 for that matter?
July 29th, 2009 at 12:20 am
We have a great demo of Laura Osnes singing that song. Not sure what the exact next step for SB will be. That’s up to the producers but we’ll announce it when it’s firm! Beyond that, we take each day as it comes.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Oh, and mp3 or Laura Osnes?! Sweet! On your site?
August 8th, 2009 at 9:06 am
huh. it’s not actually on our site yet. we must not have put it up yet. keep your eyes peeled though because it’s good. she sounds amazing.

Haha. Amazing, Kerrigan-Lowdermilk. One of your best. Keep it up!
April 17th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
what exactly is this song about?
July 10th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Who is in the cast of the mp3 selections??
July 15th, 2010 at 10:09 am
We have a bunch of recordings of this song so I’m not sure which one you’re referring to… Our most recent Sam was Meghann Fahy who is about to be the lead in Next to Normal and Helene Yorke, who just finished playing Glinda on the national tour of Wicked, was our most recent Kelly.

Is it possible that there would ever be an instrumental track to this song? (I wanted to sing this, but I needed a track). Thanks, I LOVE this song!!!
July 24th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

August 2nd, 2010 at 3:16 pm
We don’t have instrumental tracks yet but we know people want them so we’re definitely considering making them. It will be announced on our website when we do. So glad you like the music!!
August 17th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Will you guys ever make a solo version of this song available in sheet music? I would love to sing this song as a solo!
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:14 am
We’ve never considered this song as a solo. It’s possible that somewhere down the line we’d try to figure that out, but probably not until the show is produced. So glad you like the song though. If you sing it with a friend, post it on youtube (or link on here). We’d love to see it!

I am just curious what is happening in the show at this point. I am working on this duet for class, and I just wanted to be clearer about Sam and Kelly’s relationship, and why Kelly appears at this moment with Sam.
Any information you can give, I appreciate.
